Nokia N85 Features Revealed In New Ad

By Ernest Doku

There is no denying that Nokia knows how to market their phones just right. Even the strangely prophetic empty vistas in the N-Gage adverts still cause goosebumps…

As their newest additions to the N-series range have just been unveiled, Nokia also have a lifestyle ad to show just how well the new N85 dovetails into the hectic lifestyle of your average web editor/DJ/gamer/amateur photographer/bicycle rider/model… Okay, we’re a bit cynical about just how integral to cool Kemal’s day a mobile might actually be, but there’s no denying that it looks like another first class handset from Nokia.

5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, N-Gage gaming built in, a free 8GB microSD card…things are looking good as far as the N85’s specs are concerned. Apart from the lack of a TV tuner it looks like the evil twin of the N96, not a bad thing at all. Coming to a mobile phone vendor near you next month!

Blackberry Thunder / Storm, It’s Boxy But Good

By Ernest Doku

Their first touchscreen handset is still RIM’s worst kept secret ever, with the Thunder name and specs leaking way before anyone was supposed to know anything. Well, the trickle has been slow and steady and this latest one reveals the truth (?) behind it’s renaming and release networks.

Boxart courtesy of Engadget bears out these rumblings (for Verizon network customers in the US, at least), revealing the phone as the Blackberry Storm 9530, the screen emblazoned with unfathomably jubilant models, underlining RIM’s rebranding exercise of phones being for play and work!

Looking at the side of the boxart leaks the contents of the package for the ‘global smartphone,’ and it is admittedly pretty stacked. An 8GB microSD card, 3.5mm headset, SIM card included and international travel charger all show how committed Blackberry is to making a media heavy phone for the world traveller, whether in a suit or sandals.

Since eXpansys let slip briefly there has been little word of a UK release, but this image shows that a US date could be around the corner…

US Gets Revamped HTC Touch Diamond

By Ernest Doku

The 28th of August marks the long awaited (not for us, we’ve had it for ages) North American launch of the CDMA HTC Touch Diamond.

The handset will be out on the carrier Sprint, sporting a few significant distinctions from the GSM version. Aside from the fetching red paintjob on the back of the handset, the phone will be a tad chunkier with dimensions of 101 x 51 x 14 mm.

This is obviously due to the added technology, but also to the welcome addition of a 1350mAh battery (last seen in the Touch Pro) which has bolstered the poor standby time of the original. Up to you whether you still want the Diamond now it’s gained a few grams…but it has dressed up nice!

Google Android Phone IS T-Mobile G1

By Ernest Doku

And so it came to pass… Lo, the phone for which many have held out for and had been known as but a (HTC) Dream, finally has a name and wireframes to go with it.

Witness the Google branding so prominent and resplendent on the hind quarters, the HTC logo on the back of the screen, the slight wonk of the bottom navigation controls when seeing the phone in profile. There is no doubt that the T-Mobile G1 is the phone we have all been waiting for.

If that video is viewed again, the screen slides out to reveal the keyboard in exactly that curved motion the schematics indicate. So it could all be true that the first Android handset will see a September launch. Combined with the FCC filings indicating dimensions of 115 x 55 x 16.3 mm, and the fact that T-Mobile have activated their tmobileg1.com domain means that things are continuing apace!

Not long now…

HTC Announces Touch S740, Needs More Keyboards

By Ernest Doku

Riding the crest of the Touch Diamond/Touch Pro wave, Korean manufacturer HTC are surely benefitting from their change in direction towards making phones that people outside the geekerati actually like. Little surprise then, that their handset to replace the old guard of the TyTn II and S730 bears a certain similarity to their latest and greatest.

The HTC S740 may not quite be a touchscreen phone, but they more than make up for it by adding not only the Touch Pro’s “Baby Got QWERTY” behind, but also a traditional keypad underneath the screen for digits and the like.

A fairly curious setup, not least because it makes the phone look comically long, but presumably also makes those front keypad controls pretty tough to navigate when in used in landscape. Having said that, they have moved the numbers from that slide out keypad to make room for dedicated Shift and arrow keys, which will the whole thing very quirky to use in practise…

Anyway, it still has a sizable 2.4 inch screen, and all of the features that you’ve grown to know and love with the Diamond et al. 3G support, a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, TouchFLO, an FM radio and a microSD card slot for boosting the 256MB of internal storage.

It has the looks, but would the Touch handsets be quite as appealing without the finger-driven functionality? We will soon find out as the S740 will have to go up against the Touch Pro upon its release next month.

Nokia Unveils N85 And N79 Smartphones

By Ernest Doku

Today marks an increase in Nokia’s ranks with the addition of the N85 and the N79 to their burgeoning roster of high end phones.

The Nokia N85 is a true multimedia handset in every sense of the word, offering what looks to be the new gaming machine with dedicated N-Gage keys and one free game. A gorgeous 2.6 inch screen running Symbian S60 3rd edition is the order of the day, whilst Wi-Fi and 3G speeds become par for the course as the N85 aims to become the flagship Nokia handset.

The natural progression from the N81 is where this phone counts most, as the camera has been beefed up to 5 megapixels, GPS functionality has been added and it comes ready to go with an 8GB memory card.

The looks of this handset are fairly familiar, the rounded edges and two way sliding mechanism giving off a distinct N96 vibe. However, the lack of a TV tuner means that this phone will remain a cost-effective option for those looking to make their tentative first steps into Smartphone Country.

The N79 is one for the fashion conscious amongst us, offering a range of colourful Xpress-on outfits to dress up your delightful little candybar handset. You are even able to change your themes to match it, a function which will be seeing some major use from us (we’re big on pink). This one looks to be bumping off the great N78, giving 4GB of memory as standard (via a microSD card), a built in FM transmitter with a 3.5 inch audio jack,  a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, a dual LED flash, with 3G connectivity and Wi-Fi rounding out a great list of features.

Both ones to watch in the coming months, the N85 is to be released in September whilst the N79 is projected as having an October release.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 On Vodafone Site, October Release

By Ernest Doku

What a day… An embarrassment of riches as each manufacturer’s best handsets are given some real time to shine. With nary a fanfare, in the Vodafone business shop brazen and bold stands both the Samsung Omnia and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Yeah, the Nokia N96 is posted up there too, just chilling.

Samsung’s baby is already loved up with Orange, so a ‘coming soon’ for that does little for us. But the Xperia X1 is just too awesome to ignore. Despite it having only a 3 megapixel camera and being triband (frowny face for the international jetsetter like myself), the phone is too gorgeous (those panel icons are joyous!) and so long in the works that we thought we had imagined it in a fanciful dream.

To see it up on a site, with a concrete month attached to it - October no less - fills us with glee and heightened expectation. Once again Play.com was on the money, finding out the correct time of release with some blend of arcane magic and detailed manufacturer shipping information.

Now, to watch the promo film over and over in my underground lair…hurry up stupid October!

LG KC910 Revealed, Eclipses Viewty

By Ernest Doku

To be fair, the LG Viewty was right up there as one of the best ‘homages’ to the Apple iPhone’s design, and whilst not too enjoyable to use it was definitely marketed well, aiding the Korean company’s seismic shift into the public eye.

From then they went from strength to strength with an array of fashion-forward handsets like the Secret and now they are coming through with a flagship sequel which is (on paper at least) great enough to blow away all of the bad memories of the Viewty’s lack of customisation.

The LG KC910’s specs read like a phone freak’s wishlist with 3G, 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, 3 inch touchscreen, micro-SD slot, Wi-Fi (an LG first!), a multimedia player with Dolby sound and DivX playback, GPS and TV out. Still looks a bit like a Chinese iPhone knock-off though…

What more do you need apart from a release date? Well…we don’t have one I’m afraid, but October has been rumoured as a launch window. Sign up to the Omio page and we’ll keep you posted!
