Designer Mobile Phones Sell Out In Three Days In Japan
Credit crunch, schmedit schmunch! We may be going into global economic meltdown, but the need to have a painfully opulent mobile phone conquers all, as far as the Japanese market is concerned.
Despite well-documented examples of the Japanese fashion forward nature, Softbank Mobile only recently capitalised on this love of labels by releasing a Tiffany and Co. jewel encrusted handset on November 3rd.
Designed by the New York jewellers themselves, each was embedded with 537 diamonds and cost a cool £85,000.
By November 6th, all eight of the limited edition phones were gone.
Not just gone, they were bought by rich Japanese folks, rather than nabbed like so many iPhones…
“All eight were sold by November 3,” said Softbank spokesman Katsuhide Furuya. “I guess the buyers found them worthwhile.” Sounds like even he thought it was a bit pricey…
With Japan being the world’s largest purveyor of luxury goods, expect this niche to be fully exploited in the coming months. DoCoMo already have a Prada phone on Shibuya’s shelves, and Gucci have set up a site to buy exclusive garments which is accessible only via mobiles.
Think I’ll wait till it comes on Pay As You Go…save some pennies.
