E-Ink Magazine Cover Is Flashy, That’s It

By Ernest Doku

Yes, I will admit to being excited over the first step towards a Demolition Man-style neon future with the announcement of this e-ink digital media for phones as well as print. The fabled Esquire October cover was heralded to usher in a new age of scrolling text and advertisements I may actually want to stare at and be influenced by.

Well, the first video of this technology has been revealed on YouTube (where else?), and it is…not what was expected.

Watch it, and brace yourself for a marvel of modern science!!!

Only too aware of how the ’21st Century begins now’ inside a 10 inch rectangular box. Which flashes. A bit.

Was I the only one that expected a full page E-Ink cover with scrolling text and dayglo colours? This looks more like an extension of those Casio calculator watches which could change the channel in French class whilst the teacher wasn’t looking so he got confused and cancelled the lesson early. The perfect crime…

And that Ford ad? However much they paid, it was too much.

Granted, it is a great proof of concept and they are losing money on the tech to prove a point that it works. But really underwhelmed to be honest. Seems like the real future will have to wait a while for E-Ink to catch up.
