The Joy Of Texts
20 year-old text machine Nathan Schwartz has become the winner of the Second Annual Texting Championships held in New York this week.
Like most things in life, speed and accuracy were key as Nathan breezed through the regionals, showing his dexterity on the keypad. He was a ‘wildcard’ entry courtesy of MTV, who had a number of special places for competition winners in the LG-sponsored event.
The nerve-wracking final text, which was done on a traditional handset rather than the QWERTY found on a Blackberry or iPhone, was this finger-bender:
“Does everybody here know the alphabet? Let’s text. Here it goes … AbcDeFghiJKlmNoPQrStuvWXy & Z! Now I know my A-B-C’s, next time won’t you text with me?”
50 seconds, no mistakes. That’s the kind of skill that will net you a cool $50,000. And it did Nathan, beating all comers to earn himself the title of fastest texter in the US.
14-year old text addict (last pun, sorry) Morgan Pozgar was hoping to double her $25,000 winnings from the first year, but was soundly thrashed in the earlier rounds.
Serves her right, she should be giving the new blood an opportunity to come through. That’s the problem with texting, it’s gone all commercial. All about the money now. What happened to doing it just for the love? I miss my Ericsson T18…<sob>.
