Samsung Armani 2: Night Effect

By Ernest Doku

Despite sounding like an awesome direct-to-DVD movie starring Dean Cain, the Samsung Armani 2 : Night Effect is the follow up to the understated cool of their first designer/handset crossover.

The first was a slick little device with haptic touchscreen, minimalist styling and all of the exclusive allure the Armani brand carries with it.

Then why is this sequel such a let-down? Not that it is terrible in terms of specs with a 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash, is that the ‘night effect’?), built-in FM radio, and a microSD memory card slot (pretty much identical to the specs of last season’s Armani…) and the C902-style LED lighting is an interesting touch, but why does it look so cheap?

The gaudy eagle insignia emblazoned across the back, and lack of design subtlety screams ‘replacement covers from Wembley Market’ rather than ‘bespoke tailoring from the boutiques of Milan’.

The mock-up of the interface looks nice, but could that central navigation pad be an optical mouse scroller? There needs to be something about the phone to make it a must have accessory, last time the touchscreen worked wonders on impressionable fashionistas.

At a price of around €300 in Europe, it could end up one phone that gets left on the rail this November…
