Mobile Advertising on the iPhone 3G

By Peter Ross

Those wily advertisers have found a new way of exploiting the public this time through their beloved 3G iPhones.

This week an ad marketplace has been launched by Californian based company AdMob.
Previously mobile ads have been very basic, text based such as ‘Find hot girls in your area’ or is that just the sort I get. Mobile ads have always lacked lacked the sophistication of TV and film ads due to the limitations of screen size and graphics. But the 3G iPhone allows unparalleled levels of graphics and interactivity which could utilise the maps and video function of the iPhone.

The main problem with mobile advertising is that it feels more invasive than television, radio or banner ads. That stems from the fact the device is hand held and feels more personal. However there are advantages with mobile advertising as it funds companies to offer free services and content which may be a worthwhile pay off. People buy an iPhone to go online and will be used to see online adverts and mobile advertising isn’t too much of a step away from this.

Replaceable Battery on the iPhone

By Peter Ross
Screws on the 3G iPhone

You know it’s a slow news day when you are writing about the ramification of a couple of screws. However the 3G iPhone guided tour has set a lot of tongues wagging about the fact that on the bottom of the latest 3G are 2 exposed screws. If you watch this video you will noticed said screws at about 1.52.

Now Apple would never ruin the sleekness of one of their products with visible screws unless there was a jolly good reason. People more obsessive than I, see this as proof that the new 3G will allow owners to open the iPhone and replace the battery themselves. It would make sense as the biggest gripe concerning the iPhone is that when it’s dead you have to pay Apple to replace it which erases all the data stored on it.

Who knows if this is just a design flaw or proof or a replaceable battery? We’ll just have to wait to the 11th.

3G iPhone and New York

By Kate Crowley
3G iPhone

Yes it’s official - Steve ‘The Hand’ Jobs has announced that the 3G iPhone will go on sale on June 11th. It has built-in GPS, a flush headphone jack, solid metal buttons, 8GB of storage and some other stuff. Best of all it’ll only cost $199. You can see some more pictures and read some more specs over at Gizmodo.

Not to be a gloating gloater, but I’m writing this post whilst sitting in a New York hotel room with my fellow Omio-author Pete. We’re stuffing our fat faces with Ruffles crisps, drinking orange soda and watching ‘An American Tail’ on TV. Basically we’re making the most out of our trip. It’s 35 degrees Celcius out there though, which is entirely unreasonable. Over the next few days we’ll be bringing you hilarious and ignorant posts as we (try to) buy an iPhone and generally embarrass ourselves in mobile phone shops throughout the Big Apple. Watch this space!

Obligatory iPhone Post

By Peter Ross

steve jobs and an iphone

If we don’t mention the iPhone on the Omio Blog at least once a week, something bad will happen. We don’t know what, but it’s like Lost with the numbers, if we don’t produce at least one iPhone post a week, we could disrupt the flow of time and space itself, the Blog might immediately self-combust. It’s just not worth the risk.

So here’s the latest in the long-running debate about what the 3G iPhone may or not have from the Guardian.

I don’t know how they make these predictions maybe they inspect the entrails of a slaughtered bird, maybe they take mescalin and take a visit to the astral plane but now the Guardian has produced 5 unfounded predictions about Job’s latest progeny.

The Shape of the New 3G iPhone

By Peter Ross

This is unconfirmed, so don’t get yourself in a tizz, but case manufacturer XSKN are now shipping cases for the as yet unreleased 3G iPhone. Either this is one big gamble or XSKN have got some inside information on the 3G’s dimensions. Either way I wouldn’t splash out the $18.85 on a case tilll you have actually bought a 3G iPhone.

Next-Gen iPhone To Allow Switching Between 3G and EDGE?

By Kate Crowley

iPhone battery

3G is the bane of mobile phones; when it’s enabled, a lot of batteries perform poorly. If you’re using a mobile phone which doesn’t have a removable battery (step forward Mr. iPhone), a dismal battery life becomes more of an issue.

The latest firmware update for the standard EDGE-based iPhone is evidence that Apple may include a switch in the second-generation handset, allowing users to toggle between 3G and EDGE. It also implies that Apple will be using the same firmware for both first and second generation iPhones.

You can see a screenshot of the evidence here. Steve Jobs specifically mentioned the battery-draining problems of 3G when he launched the iPhone in the UK. It’s unlikely that Apple would release a product which did not at least attempt to address this problem. Maybe users of the second-generation iPhone can have their 3G cake and eat it.

AT&T Goes Back on its Promise for Free Wi-Fi… Again

By Peter Ross

Bad news if you’re a US iPhone owner as access to free AT&T wireless isn’t likely to happen any time soon . To date AT&T has said yes to free Wi-Fi then they said no, then they enabled their WiFi network and then subsequently disabled it. Even though AT&T recently announced the plan on their site and even granted users access to the network, this was actually a mistake blamed on human error by an AT&T spokesman. Don’t get too depressed though, this video of a dancing walrus is sure to cheer you up.

Yes, We Have No iPhones

By MattyB

It’s time to wave goodbye to the year’s most celebrated handset.

O2’s website claims both the 8GB and 16GB iPhone models are “no longer available” and rumours are flying that they won’t be replenished until the swanky 3G model arrives. But while the 3G version will likely be announced next month, it may still take many weeks to arrive in this country.

Feel free to drool over the HTC Diamond while you wait, if you are so inclined.
