Blackberry Bold: Quick Hands On
‘Bold’ still sounds like a silly name for a phone but Blackberry have done themselves proud with their latest emailing machine. Feast your eyes on our quick hands-on.

Finally, refreshing that Blackberry Celeb site every 12 minutes has has paid off, and we have pics of Lindsay Lohan sporting the new Blackberry Bold way before release. She joins the ranks of glossy mag fillers Kate Hudson and self confessed musician/tech geek/supercar collector/fashion icon/ladykiller John Mayer to own the snazzy smartphone.
With the release of the hotly anticipated PDA delayed in the US by a week, this shot from the set of Lindsay’s new movie is one of the most interesting things that she has done in a long time. Looks like the Bold is becoming a genuine alternative to the iPhone 3G for the trashy socialite/attention seeking millionaire about town…
Also, there are plenty of pics of not-quite A listers schmoozing at the UK Blackberry Bold launch on Celebrity Blackberry Sightings, including Rachel Stevens (the fit one from S Club, remember?) and ad band du jour The Feeling. Still have some ways to go to match the American contingent of self important celebs, mind.
What is the allure of looking important by having a Blackberry, anyway? What kind of e-mails do movie stars and rock gods receive that are so important? It’s not as though they are accountants or investment bankers following what the Dow Jones closes at. Bet they just use it as a glorified notepad. ‘Read new script’, ‘oversee clothing line designs,’ ‘attend glam party’, ‘forget underwear,’ ‘cheat on spouse with new co-star’.
I’m not jealous.
As Play.com is well aware, breaking the code of gadget silence by sticking up a price and release date way ahead of time is a great way to garner a nice spike in traffic as well as some web column inches. Well, eXpansys had managed to do the same by unveiling the touchscreen Blackberry 9500/Thunder as available to pre-order on their site.
Complete with a pretty picture of the smartphone displaying it’s home screen, there was no price or release date, but the cat was already amongst the pigeons. Naturally, the usual pockets of the internet responded in the best way it knows how, with rabid speculation. Allow us to join in.
RIM’s hot new handset being available for pre-order also meant that a bevy of specs had leaked in tandem, with the info of the handset being a quad-band, 3G affair with a dash of wi-fi thrown in for good measure. The lack of detail on aspects like the camera and GPS led everyone to believe that it was just too soon to divulge.
Okay then, we thought. Best pop over and register our interest in the iPhone killer of the week. Going through to the eXpansys page however, we were met with a nice big ‘PRODUCT NOT FOUND’. No matter, using our elite hacking skills (not to mention the marvellous way that Google caches sites), we have discovered the now fabled page.
Go here.
Why was the Thunder swiped off as quick as lightning? Who can say… Is RIM determined to not pull a Samsung and detract from the also new, yet more traditional Blackberry Bold? eXpansys receiving a slap on the wrist for their attempts at generating interest a tad too early? Oh well, whatever the reason, we do know that it is a sexy looking handset which could prove the best of both worlds for touch eager salarymen. It could also be out a bit sooner than we thought…

The above video is doing the rounds on the gadget blogs. It’s a side-by-side comparison of the BlackBerry Bold and the iPhone courtesy of the iPhone blog. This should be good, right? A comparison between perhaps the most innovative handset ever and the new brainchild of the Smartphone kings was certainly on my wishlist last Christmas. If you said, “Yes, Kate, I believe this should indeed be good”, prepare yourself for a disappointment. The video blows.
The first problem is that they’re comparing the soon-to-be-obsolete first generation iPhone with a BlackBerry Bold that isn’t even final spec. Another problem - the guy doing the review is nauseating. To say that the Bold resembles the iPhone is silly. The iPhone is one big screen. If a handset uses a completely different OS then how can it resemble the iPhone? It’s not as if Apple invented the concept of a black rectangle.
All the review reveals is what we already knew – the iPhone and the BlackBerry bold are targeted at completely different markets. If you want a touchscreen phone and are interested in multimedia, get an iPhone. If you want a physical keyboard and are interested in multimedia, get a BlackBerry Bold.
Spoiler alert: the BlackBerry Bold wins, but will this be the case in 2 weeks?
It seems that RIM are not playing nice when it comes to taking Apple on this time around. Distinctly unimpressed with their arch-nemesis taking a healthy slice of the PDA pie with the iPhone, the new Bold (née 9000) is going to take the fight to their opponent’s home turf with “Blackberry Media Sync”. Yup, it lets you hook up with iTunes, allowing playback of your music whilst reading fiscal reports, or whatever it is important folk are always scrolling through on the train. Our guess? It’ll work for about as long as it will take Apple to cook up the next iTunes update. Apple’s love for DRM definitely makes for an end of term report which reads “does not play well with others.” However, it’s one more (much needed) plus point for RIM’s newest smartphone, and the Bold’s powerful internal speaker does provide the salary man with ammunition against the street urchins playing ‘Umbrella’ full blast on public transport.

There’s going to be a lot of excited men in the city today. No it’s not time for the annual bonus, it’s better than that, the new BlackBerry Bold is released. The BlackBerry is the phone of choice for “power users” (no me either?) and international business professionals and its latest incarnation promises to be the most advanced yet.
The Bold lives up to its name. It’s taller and wider than traditional BlackBerries with a black exterior, a satin chrome finished frame and interchangeable colour back plates. The Bold comes with a newly designed QWERTY keyboard. With a half VGA colour LCD, the BlackBerry Bold offers the most vivid displays in the BlackBerry family. The high resolution, ultra bright display gives the BlackBerry Bold an unparralleled web browsing experience.
The phone has broader high speed network coverage providing 802.11 a/b/g WiFi standards. It is the first BlackBerry to support tri-band HSDPA high speed networks around the world and comes with integrated GPS and Wi-Fi. The Bold’s 624 MHz mobile processor effortlessly download emails, renders web pages and streams video.
Other features include a 1GB on-board memory, Voice Recognition software, Bluetooth 2.0 and an enhanced media player. Read more about the features here
