Experience The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Early!

By Ernest Doku

Rumours say it might be an Orange exclusive, it definitely has been delayed to 2009, but you can still get a quick fiddle with the first big design shakeup from the Finnish manufacturer with this cool new Nokia 5800 microsite!

A touchscreen device might not translate that well to the confines of a monitor, but it does a good job of demonstrating just what makes it stand out from the crowd of finger-dependant phones at the moment. The one-handed texting option seems particularly cavalier, and the user interface is a breath of fresh air from the iPhone’s swipe happy surface!

Even the Comes With Music functionality gets a little demonstration, with a selection of tracks from R&B sensation Estelle. Given the frosty reception the networks are giving the price hike of Comes With Music (they already had their own plans about digital distribution, didn’t they?), it seems the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic might have an uphill struggle to get into stores, but it looks set to fly straight off them and into music lovers’ pockets as soon as it does.

Nokia CEO Tips Hat To Heavyweight Challenger, Set To Take On All Comers

By Ernest Doku

Speaking at a gathering of the big names in Silicon Valley, Nokia’s CEO acknowledged the threat posed by new competitors to their phone industry dominance, but vowed to put up a good fight in the coming months.

Nokia’s head honcho Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo realised that the introduction of businesses once rooted in the computing world have changed the focus of the mobile phone market to high-powered smartphones and online connectivity.

“Suddenly you have the mightiest companies in the world there as your competitors. That is a little mind-boggling,” Kallasuvo said, speaking of Google and Apple entering what was previously Nokia territory…and making waves.

Also Nokia have been impressed by BlackBerry makers Research in Motion making their handsets more appealing to the casual market, but have aligned with Microsoft to get Symbian compatible syncing software, thus remaining competitive in the business sector.

Apple did get a special shout-out, as the post-iPhone market has changed the requirements and desires of phone consumers forever:

“We have a new, credible competitor in this business. You know I need to take my hat off. Of course we need to be able to respond to any competitor and we will.”

Kallasuvo’s opinion of the new phone by online behemoth Google was somewhat muted, but not without a hint of recognition that the G1, and more importantly new operating system Android, as a threat: “They are a newcomer here. I think the jury is still out: What is the new thing they bring here?” Talking of the inception of Symbian architecture alongside Motorola and Ericsson, he said: “I realized that we could have made the same announcement 10 years ago.”

With the oft-rumoured 5800 Tube to be announced in mere hours alongside the iTunes-battling “Comes With Music” service, it is clear to see that Nokia can have become a bit of an industry also-ran as far as innovation is concerned, but they are far from comfortable there.

Moving into 2009, the Finnish company certainly seems to have the drive and determination to reclaim lost ground from their competitors, but you cannot shake the feeling that they would swap the hundreds of millions of handset sales for just some of the ‘cool’ that Apple has brought to the table.

Well, maybe not all those sales…

Nokia ‘Comes With Music’ Adds Warner To Roster

By Ernest Doku

Nokia mobile music solution ‘Comes With Music’ is on its way in the third quarter of this year, alongside the first phones to take advantage.

Before the release however, is a lot of behind the scenes alignment with the big names in the music industry to ensure that the system is furnished with a diverse roster. Adding to Universal and Sony BMG, Nokia have announced today they have secured Warner Music Group, the home of everyone from Eric Clapton to Missy Elliott by way of rock group Stone Sour.

A $2.9 billion market in 2007, the music download sector is an area the labels are looking to recoup from as CD sales fall dramatically year on year.

A robust alternative to iTunes, Comes With Music is an effort to placate the labels, offering a network where for an annual fee users are given access to a vast resource of music via audio stream or download. At the end of the twelve months, users are able to retain all downloaded music from the site. Sounds like commercial suicide, but Nokia made a good point for the sense behind it. If you can legally download as much music as you want for a year, and keep it forever, why would you bother pirating at all?

With the holy trinity of the the largest labels on board and a revenue structure that challenges the pay-per-track iTunes template, Nokia’s Comes With Music could pose a serious threat to Apple’s superiority. This gives Nokia the flexibility to attract small labels who will be guaranteed to see money as opposed to a cut of limited sales, as well as the majors who have never seen eye-to-eye with Apple over pricing.

Let’s just hope that Apple don’t overtake Nokia in handset sales whilst they set their sights on the music download market. With approximately 435 million Nokias sold in 2007 alone, Apple certainly have their work cut out…

In December 2007 Nokia announced ‘Comes with Music’, an innovative idea that realises the potential for music downloads on a mobile device. When you buy a Nokia device from the ‘Comes with Music’ range you’ll get a whole year’s unlimited access to millions of tracks from the world’s best artists. You can download these tracks to a phone like the N95 or a computer through the Nokia music store. ‘Comes with Music’ will be launched in the second half of 2008.

Sony BMG has just announced that have joined Nokia’s ‘Comes with Music’. With Sony BMG on board, Nokia users can have access to their amazing range of artists and bands from Bob Dylan, Mark Ronson, the Ting Tings and Michael Jackson. I simply can’t wait!
