Google Android Phone: World’s Worst Kept Secret Becomes Official

By Ernest Doku

As we have known for a little while now, T-Mobile are the first network to launch a Google Android powered handset, as such their US arm have started sending out industry invites to the official announcement of the HTC Dream.

Whilst the big day is September 23rd, the actual release date is rumoured to be a ways off into October, and the less said about a UK launch, the better… Had we actually asked a UK rep for comment, they might well have said: “Google are making what now? Yeah, we don’t know nothing about that.”

Having said that, the Google Phone did make a surprise appearance at their Developer’s Conference in London yesterday, where a barely concealed Dream was given a thorough going-over by developer Mike Jennings. Check it.

Certainly looks a lot closer to a final version, showing much more running a lot smoother than previous iterations. Let’s hope it’s done and dusted with a release around the corner. It becomes a stressful exercise for users with monthly updates to fix buggy phone firmware (you know who I’m talking about). Never had that luxury with the Nokia 3310, I can tell you.

Thinking about it, that explains why it decided to stop ringing and only make outgoing calls after a while…

HTC Dream One Step Closer To Reality After Passing FCC Tests

By Ernest Doku

Android phone number 1 the HTC Dream has passed through the Federal Communications Commission tests, meaning that the elusive handset recently captured on tape is one step closer to a North American release.

All phones have to go through the proper channels to pass things like SAR emissions and Wi-Fi tests, and so the FCC is the place to keep tabs on for the public release of details like these. Numerous specs were also released alongside the public release of detailed schematics, including Bluetooth 2.0, dual band reception and a Blackberry-esque navigation mini trackball.

The only which remains under wraps is the Dream’s looks, those images are pretty sparse when it comes to having a gander of the handset beyond vague dimensions…still very rectangular and reminiscent of that video though. So that constant word that the first Google-powered phone will indeed have a 2008 release is gathering some real momentum.

We welcome the competition, but despite the open source and app similarities, we worry that it will be more of an challenger to Windows Mobile than Apple’s supremacy in the market. Google Android still runs the risk of being marginalised as a niche product, submerged underneath each manufacturer’s own unique UIs like Windows. Let’s hope that the HTC Dream makes waves in the industry, only then will this platform get some much needed support from the masses as opposed tech heads like us…

HTC Android Handset Spied On Interweb

By Ernest Doku

Seems like the rumours that HTC will in fact get a handset running the new Android platform by the year’s end may have some credence after all. A rather unexciting shaky-cam video has been put up on the Youtubes of a nice white phone running Google’s software, but doing very little with it!

The exciting bit is the shock reveal of keyboard behind the screen Sidekick-style, making an otherwise vanilla mobile a tad more exciting! Word is that this is the HTC “Dream,” another beauty from the makers of the Touch series including the Pro and the Diamond. No official announcements have been made, but the May unveiling of Android featured demos on a fairly similar phone to the one in the vid.

It looks like the Opus Dei quality code of secrecy surrounding Android is beginning to crumble. Guess you can’t deny the very developers you wish to court access to the newest builds, and expect them to keep quiet about it…
