NTT DoCoMo Says DoCoNo To Nokia E71 In Japan

By Ernest Doku

Execu-typers like it. Casual e-mailers like it. Heck, even our hard-to-please tech guy Robin was enamoured with its keyboard charms in his Nokia E71 video review.

Nevertheless, the fallout from Nokia’s Japanese exit is still being felt now that network NTT DoCoMo has gone back on plans to bring the E71 to market in 2009.

I guess a lack of genuinely headturning features/Pachinko simulator gets a great handset on the scrapheap earlier than ever in the Far East. Just more of a shame when it is one that gets so many other things so right.

Prepay Nokia E71, anyone? You won’t be disappointed…

Nokia E63 Announced - Here On Business Or Pleasure?

By Ernest Doku

Looking for a business phone, but the higher-ups won’t spring for a Nokia E71? Well, Nokia have announced the far more credit crunch friendly E63.

With a bargain price point of €200 (£165), the E63 offers a phone without the metal piping, GPS and HSDPA of the E71, but it does have a 2.3″ QVGA display, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support.

It also has a touch sensitive navigation pad and 3.5mm audio port, which the higher-end E71 lacked.

The 2 megapixel camera is perfectly adequate, and the cool colourways of aquamarine blue and ruby red lend the E63 the playful air of the BlackBerry Pearl range of handsets. Which is good, as that is exactly the market space this new Nokia aims to compete within.

It also has a ‘personal’ mode, which offers an entirely separate home screen, e-mail shortcuts and web site links with a single button press, meaning the E63 is equally as functional when you are off the clock.

Nokia E72 And E75 Video Demo!

By Ernest Doku

Quick! Have a look at the new promotional video for Nokia’s unannounced E72 and E75 business handsets!

Watch as they use the power of connectivity to build a building! And is that a proper Flash website running on the high res screen? Be still my beating smartphone heart!

They have definitely taken a leaf out of the Touch Pro hidden keyboard handbook, but retaining those slimline E71 and E66 looks.

As long as it makes that noise like drawing my sword every time I open the slider = SOLD.

Update: It got pulled. Told ya to be quick!

Nokia E71 Video Review

By Robin Landy
E71

Nokia has an odd strategy when it comes to business phones. Other manufacturers busy themselves with touchscreens, smooth text, fancy transitions, pinching, sweeping, scrolling and crashing. Nokia ignores all that and produces solid handsets featuring ugly-but-usable interfaces, great reception and rock-solid reliability.

The E71 is the apotheosis of this strategy. So, check out our E71 video review in the E71 reviews section for our take on this great little handset.

QWERTY vs. Predictive Text : Which Is Quicker? FIGHT!

By Ernest Doku

The Symbian blog has posted up a genius report exploring whether the predictive text function on a keypad is in fact quicker than using a full PC-style setup.

They mention the excitement surrounding the E-series turning a corner with the Blackberry QWERTY-keyboard stylings of the new E71, and lined it up against the classic 12-button N95 layout and the middle ground of an E90. The subsequent tests are rather thorough, and the respective input mechanisms are really put through their paces. The winner?

The more you practice, the quicker you get. A bit of getting to grips with the wider layout of a smartphone, and your text speeds can begin to fly. However, those T9 predictive text freaks would need to make a big change to increase performance speeds on a full QWERTY layout (you know who you are…).

Visit their site if you want to see the breakdown in even further detail. Be warned, there are graphic depictions of both tables and text message imagery. You have been warned.

Great Moments In Product Placement : Nokia Phones

By Ernest Doku

Fresh from the news of Nokia’s Tube phone in the Dark Knight (which they vehemently denied of course), we thought it only right to start this new feature with the company that turned selling stuff into an art form.

Nokia’s presence in today’s music videos is unparalleled, and their occasional moments in the cinematic spotlight have been equally memorable. Say what you like about innovation, but the way in which Nokia leaks info on a new handset is far cooler than “OMG I gotz da new W950i!” on an unofficial blog site, or such blatant product insertion that it brings the whole experience down (’Sony Presents: Casino Royale’).

Join us for some of the best Nokia cameos, complete with timecodes in a handy ‘Mr. Skin’ fashion to ensure that you can get to the best bits without too much filler…

1. Pharrell - That Girl feat. Snoop Dogg

One of the most impressive cameos of all time, where not only is the twisty multimedia-based Nokia N93i integral throughout, but they even manage to open the entire video with the Nokia ringtone. Truly it is the Citizen Kane of product placement. Pretty sure that’s not the real user interface though…
