Download Free Mobile Games From Ad-Supported Site

By Ernest Doku

It’s all well and good to have a burgeoning App Store to keep iPhone gamers happy, but what about support for all other mobile phone entertainment fans?

123Play.com has associated with Dennis Publishing to offer downloadable games through their website for free! With the tagline ‘Don’t pay, just play,’ 123Play.com has over 60 titles from some of the best mobile game makers including THQ Wireless and Digital Chocolate, with the only side effect being short advertisements before and after the game…

Just type in some precious demographic data of your mobile number, age and gender (?), and they pop off a text message to give you the download link. Games are compatible for almost every mobile phone manufacturer, and there seems to be no limit to the number of downloads allowed.

Sure there are some…less impressive titles, but there are big names like strategy shooter Worms and drive ‘em up Juiced 2 too. They have even been kind enough to offer games ‘for the ladies’ like Minesweeper and Cake Mania, so it’s not all guns and lap times.

Some of the titles may not be up to the graphical experiences that the DS and iPhone offer, but they do more importantly come for free. Also, looking at the App Store at the moment, there is a whole lot of chaff amongst the wheaty gaming goodness and this is a great alternative.

Our tips? Number One: Uno Challenge is pretty good. Number Two: If you don’t want to be affected by the advertising which flanks these freebie games, just look away! Good times.

Win Flava Flav’s Heart In A Pie Fight

By MattyB

tv games

While most licensed games are generally inferior on most consoles, they make up some of the more enjoyable mobile gaming experiences. For example, the highly-acclaimed ‘CSI’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ games. You also get a few oddities like ‘Mystic Meg’s Palm Reader’, which reads your palm and some imaginary tea-leaves.

As if that wasn’t enough, the US is providing some more televisual crossovers: we’ll soon be treated to a ‘Flavor Of Love’ game, where players get the chance to win Flava Flav’s heart with “pie fights, sky writing, and water gun battles”. Sadly there are no screenshots for this epic title. Also coming soon ‘Dancing With The Stars’ (the US version of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’) - and in the shot above, we can see the presence of both dancing and stars, making it more true to the title than the TV show.

If you want some homegrown games, look no further than ‘The Crystal Maze’, which has you shooting, jumping, puzzling and getting-annoyed-at-mazesing. And ‘Dr Who’s Top Trumps’ which I think speaks for itself.

Lego on the iPhone

By Kate Crowley

legoFirst the iPhone got Spore, and now it gets Lego. Who’d have thought Apple’s handset would become a gamer’s paradise? It’s so full of fun that it could be a contender for the DS’ crown.

The site is slow and a bit gimmicky, but it gives a nice enough demonstration of the power of Lego. My favourite feature is being able to challenge your friends to a Lego-off. Ok, if I’m being honest it’s my favourite feature because it’s the only one I looked at. I’ve no idea how Lego will work on the iPhone but I’m darn well looking forward to finding out.

By MattyB

Will Wright’s upcoming god-game ‘Spore’ can’t be accused of being picky: its release has already spread onto almost every video-games console on the market. It’s also going to find its away on the iPhone, taking advantage of its accelerometer and touch-screen capabilities.

New Fly Handset To Play Nintendo Games

By Kate Crowley

Handset maker Fly has released a new phone which plays Nintendo games. Its MC100 supports Java and Nintendo NES, SNES, Gameboy and Gameboy Color formats. It’s the first handset to do so and will probably be the first handset I will marry. I’m fickle though, so I’ll divorce it for an 80GB iPhone. Anyway, I digress. The games can be downloaded from the internet and played using special gaming keys. The phone also has an MP3 player powered by a Yamaha chip.

Most of Fly’s business is done in Eastern Europe so they are not that well known in the UK. After the MC100 I’m sure they will be though. And you’re all invited to the wedding.

Viva la Vivendi

By Kate Crowley

Yesterday Vivendi launched its new Internet music, ringtone and game provider Zaoza. The service costs 3€ a month and they’re expecting 500,000 subscribers by the end of the year. Vivendi are the owners of Universal Music, the world’s largest record company. They also own SFR and Macoc Telecom (France’s second biggest phone operator) and the pay-TV group Canal Plus.

Games such as World of Warcraft have helped Vivendi turn around its failing games fortune. Speculation is rife that Vivendi are working on a mobile version of their massively popular online game, especially since Second Life is now available in such a format.

Zaoza cost about 10 million euros to develop. The site will be available in Germany and other European countries, but no date has been given. If you’d like to take part in tests for the service then you can register at www.zaoza.com

Mobiles Get A Second Life

By Kate Crowley

Second Life, the 3D virtual platform, will soon be available on 3G handsets via Vollee’s streaming mobile games service. Pre-registering with the service will allow you to take part in the beta trials. Visit vollee.com/secondlife if you’re interested. Beta trials begin in May 2008, but you can preregister now.

Vollee’s service is the only one which can stream any high-end PC title to mobiles, including massive online multiplayer games such as Second Life. The service takes into account the very different screen size and adjusts the games accordingly so the player gets the best gaming experience possible.

Maybe you could be Second Life’s first mobile millionaire.
