Samsung Tocco Gets Suited And Booted With Hugo Boss Edition

By Ernest Doku

With the LG Prada II getting all the A-List attention as far as designer phones go, Samsung had a fashion disaster with the Night Effect, but is trying to exude a little more style and elegance with this restyled Samsung Tocco.

The Samsung F480 Hugo Boss is based very much in Tocco territory, with a 2.8″ touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, 3G connectivity, Bluetooth and USB support.

As user interfaces go, it will be using the TouchWiz interface shared by the Samsung Omnia, and according to Softpedia may well have a special ‘fashion’ widget also. Direct line to your milliner? Concierge for emergency cufflinks? Who can say what this mystery widget will do?

The iconic Hugo Boss branding is just below the screen, and there is also a limited edition Bluetooth headset to go with it.

Very subtle.

The F480 Hugo Boss will be released in December, and will be available at Hugo Boss retailers across Europe. The price, however is as sharp as the lines of their suits, coming in at a cool €479 (£405).

Samsung i8510 Innov8 Now Available!

By Ernest Doku

Great news for the more patient amongst us, a bit of an upset for Omnia and Tocco early adopters (sorry Ryan!) as the 8 megapixel behemoth Samsung i8510 is now available on Orange!

Despite having gone through more name changes than career jet fuel abuser P.Diddy, the phone formerly known as both the Innov8 and the Primera is finally available in both 8 and 16GB servings, with all manner of awesomeness including a 2.8 inch TFT screen, built in GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and superb video playback.

Available exclusively on Orange (for now…), the deals are actually pretty good for such a feature-rich handset, with £30 a month getting you 400 minutes and unlimited texts. Granted, the phone costs you fifty bones with this tariff, but after a few months you can downgrade to a super cheap deal. This means you can show off with the best specced phone on the market at a bargain basement price!

Only question, why continue to call it the Innov8 in all territories apart from the UK, the only one that would really get the play on words?

Motorola Presents…the RAZR!

By Ernest Doku

Analysts argue Motorola is in their current predicament due to a heavy reliance on successful designs, running the risk of alienating existing fans who have grown bored, whilst not generating interest in new consumers.

Doing nothing to address this, Motorola have announced the RAZR2 V9x for the US market, with other territories to follow. Mobile Gazette has details on this handset, as well as the original model.

Let’s play a game. You will find details on one here, and the other here. Now open one in each tab, and click between the two. Without the text, could you really tell them apart?

The new V9x does have GPS on the external screen, which makes for a pretty cool little mobile device. Beyond that, there is so little to distinguish from last year’s model.

Now, you could argue the same for the iPhone 3G, but Apple isn’t trying to keep the wolves from the door like Motorola. Plus, they’ve been doing the clamshell since the Startac in 1996. The RAZR managed to capture public attention, and they’ve been riding it ever since.

Nokia Gets An All-In-One With 6220 Classic

By Ernest Doku

The good thing about Nokia releasing approximately eleventy million handsets a year into the market is that sometimes, just sometimes, when the stars are in alignment on a vernal equinox, they release a phone that does everything right. That phone is the 6220 Classic.

This handset is a picture of understated elegance. An unassuming candybar that didn’t necessarily wow anyone upon its unveiling at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Fast forward five months and this phone is set to be an industry assassin, sneaking up behind and snapping the necks of all comers.

The 6220 is equipped with a Carl Zeiss optics 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and a xenon flash, usually the preserve of high-class numbers like the Nokia N82. Combine that with the full fat Nokia Maps 2.0 GPS functionality, and you have a handset fully ready to “geotag” photos based on location, as well as offering a handy alternative to a sat nav with full turn-by turn directions…

Then you have the 3G high-speed connection to allow these pictures to be uploaded to sites like Flickr or Nokia’s proprietary site Ovi in a flash, directly from the phone. These features are all pretty good, but currently exist on other phones. What the 6220 Classic does is incorporates it all into a tidy little package which is gorgeous and most importantly cheap!

Nokia have recognised the amount of convergence in this handset, and as such are putting a lot of time and effort into showcasing the 6220 for what it is. The ‘WidSets’ addition of mini applications lend a bespoke feel, similar to the way in which the Samsung Tocco allows feature priority based on personal preference. Nokia have recognised that not everyone wants a phone made of calfskin and encrusted in diamonds, and have managed to fill a mid-range handset with top drawer features.

Released soon on major networks under a smokescreen of clamour for tactile wonders, Nokia has been clever to sidestep and go for a competitively priced, feature-rich panacea to the iPhone 3G chatter. A review to follow soon…
